Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Most replacement glass windows window handles made of upvc include everything you require, however if the previous handle had pins or screws holding it, these are required to be removed. Next remove the’snap in’ cover on the handle’s base.

You will then need to determine what kind of window lock and handle you’re replacing. This is important!

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that can be used to secure casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. They feature seven millimetre square spindles that is fitted into the gearbox of a uPVC window and when the handle is turned, it triggers an array of locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles are also referred to as shootbolt handles and provide more security than the typical single point lock that is used on older window frames.

They are available in a variety of different styles, such as inline and cranked designs that can be used either left or right-hand operation. You can even find various ergonomically designed handles that are designed to enhance the feel of the handle and how it appears on your windows.

You’ll need to determine the size of the spindle from base of your uPVC handle if you want to purchase the right replacement. This measurement is referred to as step height and will help you find the perfect uPVC handle for your home.

If you require to remove any screws that secure the handle, use a screwdriver or pliers. After removing the pins or screws that secure the spindle you can take it apart to disassemble the handle.

After removing the handle you will be able to access the locking mechanism within the frame of the windows and remove the cockspur block that is attached adjacent to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The replacement uPVC handles you ordered will be able to slide over the cockspur block and then into the handle spindle, allowing the window to reopen. If you want to be sure that your uPVC handles are properly secured you should replace the cockspur block with a brand new one.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles can be found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle is closed and rotates onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in a variety of different nose heights to fit the existing frame.

The handle locks with a slender spur (little triangle bit) pulling against a plastic wedge that is fixed to the frame. These are generally one way handles, however a locking deadlock cylinder can be added for extra security.

Like the Espag handles, the replacement window panes handles for cockspur handle are simple to put in place, all you need is a new set of screws (supplied) and the correct backset. The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are many other variations however, so it is crucial to measure before buying the handle (see video below for how).

The spindle, or in certain cases the entire handle assembly can be removed by removing the handle. The new handle can be secured with a pair of pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screws can be purchased in either a brass or zinc finish to match the existing hardware and there is also the option of a self-locking version.

This is a simple to install cockspur handle replacement that is perfect for repairing or replacing old uPVC windows, they have a universal design, making them suitable for a variety of profiles and backsets. Each handle is supplied with 3 packers of different thickness, these are neatly placed on the underside of the handle’s nose and can be arranged in various ways to create backsets of 9, 13mm 17mm, 21mm and. The handles are available in left and right-handed models, and in lockable and nonlockable models. They are also available with a variety of nose heights.

Tilt and turn

Tilt and turn windows are a premium European window design that has been in use for a long time in Europe, but is only just starting to catch on stateside. The windows combine the functionality of 3 window styles – tilt, in-swing and pivot. This makes them ideal for older homes as they are able to provide more ventilation than traditional window types.

When in the closed position, tilt and turn windows lock as windows that are fixed in normal fashion. However, by turning the handle 90° or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the sash can be opened upwards and the window will tilt into allowing air to circulate through the space at the top of the frame. This is a great way to let air circulate without opening the large potentially dangerous window.

The sash can be fully opened by turning the handle 90° or 180°@. This allows full air exchange, which is particularly beneficial in rooms with a lot of draft or houses where odors from smoke or other sources can build up. This allows you to easily clean the outside of the glass for windows replacement, as you can do it from inside your home. This is a job that can be a risky task.

Tilt and turn windows are very secure. When locked in a closed position, they are very difficult to open from outside, and they feature double seals that stop rainwater from getting into the home when in the tilted or in-swing position. This feature is particularly beneficial for older homes where intruders tend to target windows which are opened with side hinges.

Spade

There are several different types of handles that can be put in on upvc double glazing replacement window-glazed windows. The two main kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles. There are also tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles, and monkey tail handles. The type of handle that you choose will depend upon your preferences and the kind of windows you have.

You must know the way your current handle is connected to the frame in order to choose the right replacement upvc handle. This is known as handing and is an essential piece of information, especially when buying online as some handles aren’t suitable for all windows. Some cockspur handles, for example, are angled while others are straight and can turn either left or right. You should also know what the spindle’s length is that is the distance from the base of the handle to the head of the handle.

Another aspect to consider when choosing the correct handle is knowing whether your windows need a restrictor or not. They are typically used in high-rise flats or commercial buildings, however they’re not a requirement for homes that are mostly domestic. Additionally, you must consider step height which is the distance from the bottom of the screw plate to the apex of the handle.

Spade is the word from Old English spadu or spaedu and has been translated in various languages including German spaten and Low German Spathen. In the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in New York City the word spade was used to denigrate black people. Since then spade has been a symbol of African American pride and heritage.

When replacing the handle of a Cadenza style handle, it’s essential that you get the right size. The handles are available in both straight and angled versions that differ by only a few millimetres. The handle head may change between a D and a T-shaped shape, or be without handles at all.
