Line-up
Turn Back, the band’s third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet format, and an even more consistent and powerful album with a sharper edge. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball’s improved ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich’s keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour support the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band’s history not to include one single track with the word “A” in its title. It also included one previously not released track, “Kari-Anne”.
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability.
