Honeycomb is a delightful wonder of nature, created by honeybees. It is a perfectly structured hexagonal structure constructed from natural beeswax, and it’s one of the most functional parts of the hive. Today, honeycomb structures have numerous scientific and engineering applications.

The hive uses honeycomb for three reasons: a nursery for new bees, a place to store pollen until it is transformed into “bee bread,” and a long-term location for the hive’s reserve of nectar. When a beehive has swarms, the bees startup a new hive with a new honeycomb foundation.

Bees create honeycombs by vibrating their flight muscles to generate heat. This softens the beeswax plates they secrete from their abdominals. The bees then form the wax into cylinders, and connect adjacent cells on both sides. This arrangement is highly consistent, suggesting that it is not merely the result of random physical forces, but rather a highly structured pattern of construction behavior. It’s also a striking example of convergent evolution – an example of convergent evolution where the same pattern emerges in closely related species.
