About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from the Latin word that means “all-encompassing” and was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name throughout the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band’s fifth album the band loses their manager and is faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and record a new album with a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band’s performance in Africa during their recent tour. Toto’s touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
