The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word which means “all encompassing,” the group was determined to explore every musical style.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand all over the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band’s fifth album the band loses their manager and are put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a new album and change their name an entirely different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out.
