Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are great for strolling around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver, even in tight spots.
For a smooth ride, go for a pram that has air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with an swivel wheel that rotates 360 degrees in front. However, they are prone to punctures, so be prepared with an repair kit.
Sturdy frame
New data show that three-wheeled buggies, the emblem of the noughties, which were more expensive than common sense, are in steep decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, and are more versatile and easy to drive, while also looking elegant.
The bigger the wheels are the better your buggy will cope with uneven surfaces and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 wheel push chair year old and found it was able to withstand cobbles, grass rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said that “it feels sturdy to push and very solid when going over difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require occasionally pumping) have suspension built-in which was extremely comfortable for my kids.
Another thing to take into consideration is the size of the seat and shape. You will want it to be large enough to accommodate your child’s comfort. You will also want it to be able to recline for them to lie flat. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat, which allows your child to lie flat and face you, while others only allow a face-to-parent one.
A great option for those who want to tackle off-road and muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. It can be used as a single unit from birth, and then expands to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness, and a large cushioned seat unit. The storage options are excellent too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets on the hood, and an attractive pouch at the rear of the seat unit.
Wheels with a greater diameter
Larger wheels means that your buggy will have more stability on rough terrain – perfect for off-road buggies. They also allow you to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have rotating front wheels that assist you in maneuvering around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability with which they can be pushed. This is especially useful when you crash into a tree or a kerb. The front wheel will lift slightly to keep it from hitting it.
Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you’ll need to have repair kits and an spare inner tube in your arsenal.
Some of our favourite 3 wheeled buggy-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, “perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles” and are able to easily climb and descend kerbs. The buggies also have suspensions that Kath says “smooths out bumps extremely effectively”.
The drawback of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite wide and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This is problematic if you intend to are using it as a jogger, or need to fit through narrow doorways while out and about. Luckily, most models have small folding options that let you take off the front wheels to create more compact storage.
Easy to manoeuvre
A three-wheeled buggy is more comfortable to drive with a child. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can turn on a dime, and are easy to navigate, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the 3 wheeler buggy-wheeler with her toddler, and she said: “The Terrain is a delight to navigate on rough terrain. The front swivel wheel was particularly helpful.” I was also awed by how well it dealt with kerbs, especially when using the brake operated by hand. It was extremely stable when in the downhills or on a rough terrain.”
The only drawback to this amazing maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy’s larger wheels sometimes mean it has to be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces – something to keep in mind especially if you live in a metropolitan region. If this is a concern then a 4-wheel buggy may be a better option for you.

Kath, our MFM reviewer, also adored the spaciousness of the buggy. There’s a nimble, large basket that is quite spacious for a buggy of this size. Plus, there’s also a handy pouch on the back unit, as well as two smaller mesh pockets underneath the hood where you can keep your phone and keys.
