If your car’s key doesn’t start in the ignition you must replace it. This guide will teach you how to replace the ignition key on a saab 93 key 9-3. You’ll need to replace the key, buy another reprogrammable device, and purchase a new case for your key-fob.
In contrast to older models, the majority of modern Saab vehicles use an electronic transponder inside the key-fob, instead of a physical key that can be used to unlock and start the vehicle. The reprogrammable batteries that are in the key-fob eventually get worn out, and eventually aren’t able to hold any charge. This is particularly true if you use the same key for the lock you have.
The good news is that the battery is easily replaced by an experienced locksmith. If you have the right tools, and a little patience you can do it yourself. The first step is to separate the key-fob. How to Replace the Ignition Key on a Saab 9-5
The metal component of a classic Saab key is easy to copy, and is not much of an impediment against vehicle theft. The electronic part of the key-fob is equipped with an embedded chip that can identify the car when the key is inserted in the ignition switch.
Saab has relied on the technology of this anti-theft system for more than a decade. It’s not as secure as an actual lock on the door but it makes the process of stealing your vehicle more difficult. This is the reason why every Saab owner should always keep a spare key on hand.
The majority of new Saabs come with two keys from the factory, but you can buy more keys from a dealer through a special handheld computer known as a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). If you lose all keys, the dealer will replace your CIM or TWICE modules and charge a premium for it. We can reprogram your computer’s EEPROM to accept new keys without replacing expensive modules.
