Origins

Toto’s early history that began in 1917, mirrored Japan’s economic growth. In the first half of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for new, modern urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and boost profits. The company implemented a just-in-time method of managing supply chains and applied the same method for its sales process. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
