Line-up
Turn Back, the band’s third studio album, was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball’s increasing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich’s work also was more refined, sharper and less cloying than on previous performances.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
