Line-up
Turn Back, the band’s third studio album it was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball’s increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich’s work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group went on a long-distance tour to promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word “A” in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, “Kari-Anne”.
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
