In the course of recording the band’s fifth album the band loses their manager and is faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band’s performance in Africa during their recent tour. Toto’s touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over and the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a string lineup changes and a series of disappointing releases prompted Toto to end their tour for a few years. However, the group resumed touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return to their best form and the tour that went with it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
